Biography
Performing
A native of New York State, Mrs. Harrington received degrees in Flute Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music and Florida State University, and a Master of Arts in Music Education at UAB. From 1997-2007 she worked primarily as a symphonic musician, holding such posts as Principal Flutist of the Orlando Philharmonic (where she also appeared as soloist), Principal Flute of the Evansville Philharmonic (IN), Owensboro Symphony (KY), and Second Flute of the Alabama Symphony and St. Louis Symphony (an appointment that included a Carnegie Hall tour and several radio broadcasts). She has worked with many other orchestras, including the Indianapolis Symphony, the Nashville Symphony, and the Florida Orchestra. She has performed in music festivals in Aspen, Domaine Forget (Quebec), and Grand Tetons, WY.
Teaching
Mrs. Harrington has served on the faculties of the University of Montevallo, University of Evansville (IN), Innsbruck Music Festival (St. Louis), and Alabama School of Fine Arts (Interim). She maintains a large, selective flute studio in Birmingham. Passionate about teaching the flute, she meets students where they are, and helps my students achieve their highest potential on the instrument. In the last 20 years, her students have consistently placed into into All County, All District, and All State Bands, as well as All-Region and All State Orchestras, Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra, and Alabama Youth Symphony, earning top chairs in all of these. In addition, her students have competed in and won or placed at the the AL All State Solo Competition, the Mid-South Flute High School Soloists Competition, the ASO Lois Pickard Competition, and ASYO Concerto Competition, the Utah Flute Sonata Competition and the National Association of Arts and Letters Competition. Nationally, her students have participated in the MPulse (MI) Performing Ars Summer Program, the Indiana University Summer Music Festival, the Interlochen Flute Institute, the Masterworks Summer Festival (SC), the Complete 21st Century Flutists Summer Program (California State University), and the Brigham Young University Young Artists Program. My graduated students have earned tens of thousands of dollars in Music/ Band scholarship money, even if they are not Music majors. Mrs. Harrington also spent several years teaching music to young children in the Birmingham area. She held positions at Oak Mountain Intermediate School, St. Luke's Day School, and All Saints Pre-School, and is certified as a Kindermusik and Music Together teacher.
Personal
Ms. Harrington has been a resident of in Inverness, AL, since 2000. She lives with her 2 sons, and dog Daisy (who also loves flute students). Her hobbies include gardening, running, baking, hiking, and being invloved in chuch activities. She loves to travel to visit family in the US, or to have adventures overseas!
